2 June | Italy’s Republic Day
June 2, 1946 marks the birth of the Italian Republic. Rome is at the heart of the celebrations: the day’s ceremony traditionally includes the laying of a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria by the President of the Republic, a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali, the flyover of the Frecce Tricolori across the skies of Rome, and the free opening of the Quirinale Gardens to the public.
29 June | San Pietro & Paolo
Patrons of the city and founders of the new Christian Rome, Saints Peter and Paul have always held great significance for the capital and have therefore been widely celebrated throughout history. Among the rituals still observed today are the “pallium,” the white wool stole that the pontiff gives to certain bishops as a symbol of the union between the universal and local churches, the kissing of the foot of the bronze statue of St. Peter, the procession that accompanies the chain of St. Paul, and the historic floral carpet on Via della Conciliazione, with natural paintings made of flowers by more than 1,000 master florists.
Another much-loved tradition is the Girandola, the spectacular fireworks display historically linked to the feast, which lights up the Roman sky in a tribute to the city’s Baroque celebrations. The center of the festivities is, of course, St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, together with the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in the EUR district.
Exhibitions this June in Rome
This June, Rome’s cultural calendar brings together photography, contemporary art, music, architecture, ancient history, and major international exhibitions across some of the city’s most iconic venues.
At Palazzo Esposizioni Roma, June is especially rich. The World Press Photo Exhibition 2026 is on view until June 29, bringing together some of the year’s most powerful works of international photojournalism. In the same venue, Mario Schifano continues until July 12, offering a major look at one of the most influential figures of Italian post-war art. Also not to miss is ROMASUONA. Music in Italy 1970-1979, an exhibition that explores a crucial decade in Italian culture through music, visual experimentation, and social change.
A breath of fresh air comes from the Festival des Cabanes at Villa Medici, running until September 28, 2026. Now in its fifth edition, the festival transforms the historic gardens of the French Academy in Rome into an open-air laboratory of architecture and landscape, with six new installations and a multidisciplinary artistic programme.
At the Scuderie del Quirinale, Treasures of the Pharaohs has been extended until June 14, offering a final chance to visit one of the season’s most successful exhibitions, dedicated to the splendour of ancient Egypt.
Photography takes centre stage at the Museo dell’Ara Pacis with Robert Mapplethorpe. Le forme della bellezza, on view from May 29 to October 4, 2026, featuring around 200 works by one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. On weekend evenings, the monument also hosts L’Ara si rivela, an immersive light and sound experience.
At Palazzo Bonaparte, Hokusai continues until June 29, bringing the visionary world of Japan’s great master to Rome. Meanwhile, at MAXXI, Andrea Pazienza. Non sempre si muore celebrates one of Italy’s most original and rebellious creative voices.
Other major exhibitions continue across the city: Robert Doisneau at the Museo del Genio until July 19, From Vienna to Rome. Habsburg Masterpieces at Museo del Corso, Palazzo Cipolla until July 5, and Bernini e i Barberini at Palazzo Barberini until June 14.
From contemporary photography to Japanese prints, Egyptian treasures, Baroque masterpieces, and architectural installations in historic gardens, Rome in June is a feast for the curious eye.

Rome Pride 2026 is ready to march through the streets of the capital, 32 years after the first historic Italian Pride in 1994. Each year, around 50,000 people gather to celebrate and affirm the importance of values like equality, respect, diversity, and inclusion.
This June, the parade will start at Piazza della Repubblica and end at Viale delle Terme di Caracalla.

From June 21 to 30, Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata returns to the stage of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in the elegant production directed by Sofia Coppola, with sumptuous costumes by the Maison of Valentino Garavani. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils’ La dame aux Camélias, the opera tells the tragic love story of Violetta and Alfredo, set against the glittering backdrop of Paris.

Until the 15th of September the Parco del Celio will be hosting the event JAZZ&IMAGE organised by the historic Jazz Club of Rome Alexanderplatz Jazz Club, with the artistic direction of Eugenio Rubei. It will be home to both Italian and international musicians alike, performing throughout the end of the summer.

This summer, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma moves from the Baths of Caracalla to the Circo Massimo while restoration works are underway. From June 29 to July 31, 2026, the historic venue will host opera, ballet, cinema, symphonic music and special performances under the Roman night sky, with a capacity of up to 6,000 spectators. The season opens on June 29 with Alessandro Barbero: San Francesco, un santo scomodo, followed in July by The Gladiator in Concert, Aida, Roberto Bolle and Friends, Romeo e Giulietta, Patti Smith and Carmina Burana.

Ne sarebbe fiero Umberto Veronesi, cui questa giornata è intitolata e dedicata. Premiamo due scoperte che si integrano per completarsi: il trasferimento cellulare adottivo di Rosenberg e la modifica genetica di cellule immunitarie di June”.
“Con questo premio – ha proseguito Fontana – valorizziamo il contributo della ricerca scientifica per il progresso sociale ed economico. E oggi siamo ancora più convinti di voler incidere sul benessere della popolazione, premiando la qualità e la ricerca, nel mondo e in Lombardia perché un Paese senza ricerca e senza innovazione è un paese senza futuro”.
“Vogliamo continuare a far crescere ogni giorno sul nostro territorio – ha aggiunto Fermi – nuove teorie e tecnologie potenzialmente ‘dirompenti’. Siamo sulla strada giusta, come dimostrano i numeri che possiamo vantare nella nostra Regione e come, in maniera davvero perfetta, dimostra anche questo Premio della Ricerca, mirabile sintesi tra mondo dell’Università, della Ricerca e dell’Innovazione. E quest’anno, più che in altre occasioni, anche mirabile esempio di collaborazione”.
Steven Rosenberg è un chirurgo e immunologo statunitense che lavora ai National Institutes of Health a Bethesda, Maryland. È stato il primo a usare cellule immunitarie per curare il melanoma, tumore cutaneo per il quale all’epoca non c’era terapia. Le cellule furono estratte dai pazienti, fatte crescere in laboratorio e reinfuse nei pazienti assieme a Interleuchina 2. Si tratta di una molecola solubile che porta all’attivazione delle cellule antitumorali. Alcuni pazienti furono curati in modo definitivo usando le loro stesse cellule. Studi successivi dello stesso Rosenberg e di Carl June hanno permesso un deciso passo avanti.
Gli studi di Rosenberg e June hanno fornito dunque all’immunoterapia con cellule immunitarie una ‘proof of principle’, dimostrando che questo approccio funziona. Lo sviluppo futuro dell’immunoterapia sarà quindi quello di aumentare il repertorio di tumori aggredibili. Ciò avverrà raffinando sempre più la creazione di nuove cellule riprogrammate, con specificità sempre più elevata. L’immunoterapia oggi si presenta dunque sempre più come un sistema integrato di approcci. Non si parla inoltre di immunoterapia solo contro i tumori, le applicazioni future potrebbero riguardare anche altre patologie, come ad esempio le malattie autoimmuni. In tutto questo, le intuizioni di Rosenberg e June sono state rivoluzionarie.
La Giornata della Ricerca che, come ogni anno, si è svolta al Teatro alla Scala di Milano, è dedicata alla memoria di Umberto Veronesi. “Il Premio assegnato a Steven A. Rosenberg e Carl H. June per le loro scoperte sull’utilizzo delle terapie cellulari nella lotta al cancro rappresenta un importante riconoscimento alla medicina d’avanguardia. L’ obiettivo è aumentare le percentuali di guarigione per le diverse forme di tumore fino ad oggi considerate non curabili. Ricerca d’eccellenza ed innovazione rappresentano il motore fondamentale per trovare soluzioni di cura sempre più efficaci per i pazienti di oggi e di domani” – ha affermato il professor Paolo Veronesi, presidente di Fondazione Veronesi e Direttore Divisione Senologia Chirurgica IEO.
La rete, alla quale potranno aderire anche IRCCS privati quali San Raffaele e IEO, rappresenta il nucleo attorno a cui costruire un ‘network lombardo’. Esso potrà includere anche gli altri centri che propongono ai propri pazienti terapie avanzate.

Al secondo posto 10 studenti della 4H dell’Iss ‘Viganò’ di Merate (Lecco), con il progetto intitolato ‘Smartwear’, studiato per rispondere alle necessità di Claudio, un bambino di 4 anni che ha avuto una paralisi cerebrale infantile. Oltre a non aver alcun movimento spontaneo, il piccolo è cieco e non parla, ma ha preservato il canale uditivo e quello tattile. Il prodotto si compone quindi di un guanto, degli occhiali, un bracciale e un’interfaccia grafica che funge da telecomando. Il tutto per creare un’attività ludica in grado di connettere il bambino all’ambiente, aumentando la sua qualità di vita attraverso un maggior benessere.
